overclocking…..

right now for a few days i had my e6600 overclocked at 2.7( fairly low compared to some peoples s you probably know) but then my comp kept failingto boot and did the 3 attempts the bios resets to default settings… that was the last time a month ago.. i tried again 2nite aiming for 2.6 odd setting it to 288×9 … straight away no post and 3 restarts… so i decided ill give it a ask on here see if any1 knows whats up…

1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) Socket 775 FSB1066 4MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
1 x OCZ 2GB Kit (2×1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 5-5-5-12 GOLD XTC *SPECIAL OPS* ED
1 x Zalman Heatpipe CPU cooler with quiet 110mm blue LED fan

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

thats the stuff im working with

and to attempt the overclock ive bin altering the fsp speed as i mentioned then setting the voltage thing to auto as the bios instructs… am i missing something? or is this auto function not likely to work well… even though its what i used for my stable for a few days overclock of 2.7…

well i hope that all makes sense midnight post lol

thanks for reading and replies..

Heh. Overclocked my video card and it ran slower

I thought I’d mess around and overclock my geForce 6600 PCIe w/ 256mb Video card. Original speed is 300/500mhz. in 3Dmark 2001se I get about 12500 benchmark score.

When I OCed it to 320/520mhz. The score DROPPED 5000 points and I received 7,400 points. I also noticed that it took longer to render images on the monitor.

I’m running my CPU and RAM at stock settings.

Does anyone know if this can happen? I’m just curious. Regardless of what the cause was I’m not going to keep it overclocked.

FSB confusion when buying parts for oc’ing

Ok I am a little confused on the FSB and overclocking with respect to buying components. Say I buy a cpu with FSB 1066Mhz and a mb that has 1066/800Mhz (whats this second number by the way) and I buy DDR2 800. Now if I wanted to overclock all of this stuff what are my limitations?

Does this mean that the max FSB I can have when oc’ing is 1066Mhz and must rely on the multiplier to get over the 2.4Ghz the cpu is rated at? What does this all mean for the max capability of the memory? With FSB 1066Mhz wont the memory be running at 2132Mhz and therefore wasting the potential of the memory of 6400Mhz?

DNS lookup

Just within the past day or two I’ve started having some odd behavior I can’t seem to fix. On this vista install some of my DNS requests have started to run slow. I first noticed it in Firefox when I would get the "Looking up www…" message for an extended period of time in the status bar. Usually takes at least 10 seconds to resolve where ever it is I’m trying to get to. IE also is taking more time than usual just like Firefox.

I tried to ping my destination (lets just use google as the example) and the following happened. If I do a ‘ping google.com’, the name is resolved and I immediately get replies. If I do a ‘ping www.google.com’, its sits for almost 10 seconds then comes back with the resolved ip address and replies. Any address I try and ping follows suite… if I prefix ‘www’ it hangs for the 10 seconds and then works. Without the ‘www’ it works immediately. In my browser, I get similar behavior. If I go to an address with ‘www’ prefixed, it does "Looking up…" for a period of time. Without the ‘www’, it immediately go to the page.

The only thing I can find that may be causing or related to this is the firewall. If I turn off vista’s firewall everything works fine. When the firewall is on I get the problem. I’ve been unsuccessful in finding what the firewall may be blocking.

Within the past few days the only thing I’ve done out of the ordinary is setup a vpn connection to some destination. I used it and deleted it when I was done. Other than that, nothing of mention really’s been changed lately.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Asking for help with MSI board

My first post. Yeah!!

I’m setting up a system for an arcade cabinet, and I’m trying to get whatever horsepower I can out of it. Here’s the specs:
MSI RS482M4-ILD
1GB PC 3200
AMD X64 3000+
On-board ATI x300
Copper-core CPU cooler (generic, but seems to work well)

I’d like to OC to at least 2GHz, but so far haven’t had much luck. I tried changing the multiplier but it will only let me decrease it, if I set it higher then reboot it always goes back. (Setting it in the bios).

I’d also be interested in tweaks to XP (beyond what’s obvious) to improve performance on this dedicated machine.

Thanks!
Blue

XP to Vista, trouble with links

Just have bought new laptop running Vista. Previously have used XP. With XP, when I opened a URL, I could drag it across to a dropdown menu on the extreme right hand side of the Google tool bar, just beneath the "Settings" button. With Vista there is no such dropdown menu available. Very grateful for any suggestions as to how I could set one up.
